Useful Tips For Spending Less Time On Your Phone

The reality is that while phones enhance our lives in terms of communication and convenience, there are plenty of negative effects involved in their use. These range from potentially deadly distracted driving to missing out on the natural wonders of the world around us. People were never intended to spend long hours each day with their heads down and eyes focused on a tiny screen.

It can be challenging to decrease your phone use. For instance, research shows that incoming texts and social media notifications prompt a dopamine hit, which is when the feel-good sensors in the brain fire up. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to make it easier for that phone to stay in your pocket.

Be Mindful: A key first step is to ask yourself “why” when you’re considering phone use and then to focus on “what” you could be doing instead. This creates a positive framework that will decrease phone use while simultaneously enriching your life. Always bear in mind that time gazing at your phone reduces your ability to do things you truly enjoy, whether it’s reading, hitting the gym or interacting with loved ones.

Fade to Gray: One science-backed way to make your phone less interesting is by turning on the grayscale feature, which is an option on most smartphones that turns its colors into hues of gray. This reduces your phone’s ability to generate that dopamine hit. On iPhones, you can turn on grayscale by going to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters. On Android, go to Settings > Accessibility > Color and Motion > Color Correction and select grayscale from the options.

Silent Running: The sound of incoming texts and emails is hard to ignore; if anything, they actually make your brain want to pick up the phone. The answer to that problem is obvious – simply put your phone on silent and turn off push notifications.

Don’t Carry That Weight: When something is constantly within your view, it’s only natural to want to reach for it. One strategy proven to fight this is to get your phone away from your body and out of your visual line. That means out of your hand, out of your pockets or off the table in front of you. Try leaving your phone upstairs or putting it in the kitchen drawer while you watch a movie with your family. This isn’t easy, so if it takes a few tries, that is OK.

86 the Apps: If you’re always opening your TikTok app or your Pinterest app, it could be a good idea to make those things a little less accessible to ease the temptation. You can keep an app active while adding a few extra steps — or in this case, clicks — to use it. This could mean putting it in a folder or on one of the subsequent screens that follows the main home screen. Better yet, remove your social media apps entirely.

Best Workouts to Promote Longevity

Decades of research has confirmed the many different ways exercise benefits the human body. Most notably, it directly supports those factors essential to a long, healthy life — mobility, heart health, brain health, muscle strength and more. To exercise regularly is to enhance the cycle of healthy aging.

That said, specific types of exercise make greater contributions than others. If your goal is longevity, here are some workouts you’ll want to prioritize.

Put Your Heart in It: Cardiovascular exercise such as running, biking, dancing and boxing can have a tremendous impact on people as they age. Cardiovascular activity strengthens the heart, thus lowering the risk of heart disease, the No. 1 killer of American adults. It also lowers blood pressure, cuts the risk of diabetes and does wonders for brain health. With aerobic exercise, your goal should be to sustain a moderate to vigorous intensity to reap the maximum benefit.

Lift Those Weights: It’s easy enough to incorporate strength training in your workout – just hit the weights at the gym. Regular bouts of weightlifting help maintain bone mass, bone density and muscle mass, three areas known to deteriorate as people age. If you’re new to the barbells, consult a health care professional before you start and consider taking strength-training classes.

Strike the Proper Balance: Falls are the greatest cause of injury-related deaths in people over 65 and are usually due to a lack of mobility. Exercise, by contrast, bolsters mobility, particularly through such balance-training activities as tennis and tai chi. With balance a challenge for so many older Americans, it’s important to consult a doctor or physical therapist before deciding which exercise is right for you.

Strength in Numbers
: Social connection is crucial to aging well and living a fulfilling life, with data confirming that people who dwell amongst family or in welcoming communities tend to live longer than those going it alone. Suffice it to say, joining an exercise class means benefitting not only from the exercise, but the social connections as well.

Sustainability: The idea of incorporating longevity-focused exercise into your life is all well and good but how do you sustain the initiative? That is the real quandary many of us face. It helps to prioritize what you truly enjoy, whether it’s weights at the gym or a couple of sets on the tennis court. Also, you must commit to your exercise regimen. Consistency is the key, as the greatest benefits only come through regular, steady progress.

How to Begin Playing Pickleball https://test25.louieambriz.com/how-to-begin-playing-pickleball/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-to-begin-playing-pickleball Sat, 27 Jul 2024 00:12:21 +0000 https://harmonycom.com/?p=1362 Looking for a new activity? Why not try Pickleball? Here's how you can start!

How to Begin Playing Pickleball

It emerged seemingly from nowhere a few years ago, a game with a funny name and a reputation for being little more than a dumbed-down take on tennis. Pickleball? Really? You expect me to take any sport called that seriously?

The initial naysayers have been all but shut down these days, as pickleball has emerged as the national sports phenomenon of the 2020s. And its growth shows no signs of abating, as more and more Americans gather on tennis courts every day to pursue their passion. Thinking of joining them? If so, here are a few tips to help ease your transition from outsider to pickleball practitioner.

Find A Mentor: If you are interested, there is a good chance you know someone addicted to pickleball, and they will be your best resource getting started. They will know the rules and the best places to play and, most likely, will have a few different types of paddles you can test out before buying your own. The most beneficial part of having a pickleball mentor is having someone to play with and introduce you to the pickleball community. It can be intimidating showing up at the local courts as a newbie.

Get Equipped: You’re going to need some gear out there. The pickleball paddle is the most important piece of equipment, naturally, and there are three things to consider before purchasing one – weight, grip size and paddle shape. The benefits of a lighter paddle are less stress on your shoulder/elbow and increased ball control; the downside is reduced power. Do the research to determine which paddle will help you maximize your game.

Time for A Shoe Down: Many beginners overlook the importance of their shoes, but it definitely will improve your play by buying proper court shoes. To be sure, there are a lot of pickleball-specific shoes available but that’s largely just a marketing ploy – good tennis shoes will do the trick. Also consider which surface you will be playing on the most before picking out the right shoes.

Where to Play?: As noted, your pickleball mentor will know of all the hot spots and hidden gems in your area. There are also tons of resources online for finding places to play. For example, almost every area has a Facebook group that you can join to find out all about court options, open play times and leagues. Another option is to just show up at the local courts and ask people where the best places to play are for beginners. Some of them may welcome you into their games or offer guidance on when/where are the best places for beginners to hop in.

While being independent travelers keep these pointers in mind. "Adventure awaits just around the corner – pack your bags and let happiness lead the way".

    Tips for Women Traveling Alone

The past three decades have seen a marked increase in the number of women traveling alone, not just here in the United States but across Europe, Asia and South America. The practice has long lost even a hint of its old stigma and the travel industry is actively creating new tourism opportunities for women who want to see the world solo.

For all that progress, women traveling alone do face certain challenges they wouldn’t encounter as part of a couple or larger group. Here are some factors to bear mind before you consider going it alone.

Pack Light: Aside from the fact you’ll have to carry your stuff yourself, you’re less likely to lose something if there are fewer things to track of. Also, consider using a backpack instead of suitcases to be able to come and go more easily.

Plan But Leave Room for Spontaneity: Don’t schedule every minute of every day. Schedule a few key things that you want to do most but leave room in your schedule for spontaneity. Sometimes you’ll find out about events at the last minute or meet new friends who invite you to do something with them. If you are flexible in your schedule, you won’t have to say no to these unexpected adventures.

Connect with Your Peers: There are lots of social media groups for women who enjoy traveling alone, and they’re a great place to connect with like-minded people, whether you’re looking for advice, opinions or even someone to meet up with while traveling. It’s a fine way to make new friends and gain insights from other people’s experiences.

Do the Research: It’s important to know the basics of a place’s culture and history before you visit. We should all respect the local cultures of the places we go, and in order to do that, you first need to understand it. Should you tip? If so, how much? Is it expected or considered rude to haggle with shopkeepers? Are you expected, especially as a woman, to dress a certain way in certain areas? These are all questions you should know the answers to before you arrive.

Stay Safe: When traveling alone as a woman, you do need to be safe. Don’t tell strangers where you’re staying, and always listen to your instincts when deciding how much to share with the people you meet. If someone’s asking a lot of questions and making you uncomfortable, remember that you do not owe them information about yourself. You also shouldn’t post your every move on social media. There will be time to share all those Insta-worthy pictures when you get home or have moved on from a place.

Ring On Your Finger: Buy a cheap ring that can pass as a wedding band before you leave home. This helps ward off unwanted attention from men. it’s gross that women have to think of things like this, but it does help.

Read through for some tips to help your teen get a summer job.

Tips for Helping Your Teen Get a Summer Job

Landing that first summer job is a milestone in every teen’s life, that moment when they truly begin making the transition from childhood to adult life, from a passive observer to an active participant in the nation’s economy. There are life lessons to be gleaned from those first days on the job, as well as the opportunity to revel in the experience of actually having earned the money in your pocket.

As the federal government’s monthly hiring figures confirm, there will be plenty of jobs out there this summer for ambitious teens. Parents can help by providing the guidance teens need to make an educated start of their working life. Here are a few ideas to keep in mind.

Manage Expectations: One way to help your teenager in his or her job search is to remind them that just because they apply for a job doesn’t mean they will get it. They need to work hard and send out multiple applications just like adult job seekers do.

Prep Time: While your teenager will be in the interview without you, you can still help them prepare. Encourage your teen to ask lots of questions during the process and remind them they shouldn’t be afraid to ask about hours, pay and time off.

Good Vibes: Sometimes, a first job doesn’t live up to its expectation, so remind your teen that a good attitude can help the day go by faster. Let them know that showing up on time every day, being reliable and filling in for others when needed also shows the boss that your teen has what it takes to succeed.

Get Around Town: If your teenager doesn’t drive yet, transportation to and from work could fall on you. Consider if your teen could walk or ride their bike to work or perhaps catch a ride with a friend. If you need to drive them to and from work, make sure your teen’s work hours don’t overlap with your own.

Dress for Success: Depending on the job, your teen may need to buy work clothes. Perhaps not, if the local grocery store or fast-food restaurant provides uniforms. But what if your teenager is working in an office? Find out as early as possible if your teen needs special clothes for the job.

Money Matters: It’s vital to discuss finances in advance and teach your teen basic budgeting skills. A lot of teens are surprised to discover how much of their paycheck goes to taxes, so warn them in advance that a percentage of the money goes straight to the government. This is also a good time to discuss the importance of saving money and making wise buying decisions.

Always Professional: An entry-level position means your teen may have to deal with lots of supervisors and perhaps unpleasant co-workers. Talk to your teen about how to deal with difficult people up front before it becomes a real issue.

Put Down the Phone: Teens should be reminded to turn off their phone during an interview and make sure they know it isn’t appropriate to send text messages or be distracted by their phone while on the job. Also, make it clear that it’s not OK to complain about work on social media.

What’s Happening in Manufactured Housing in 2024

As has been the case for several years, the lack of affordable housing in the United States ranked in 2023 among the nation’s most discussed and contentious issues. It was part of the debate over how to handle the homeless crisis in this country as well as the cratering of many cities’ once-vibrant downtown business districts. Elected officials and entrepreneurs across the country spent the year conceiving and implementing strategies intended to restore the American dream of home ownership.

One upside to the crisis is the rising recognition of manufactured housing as a high-demand asset. Seemingly gone forever is the stigma that once plagued the industry, replaced with an increased demand for modern units and communities outfitted with all the amenities to meet the needs of a growing clientele.

So what does 2024 hold for manufactured housing? More of the same, industry insiders report.

Production: With interest rates and inflation slowing, research suggests that manufactured home production in 2024 will resemble that of 2023. Cumulative production was at 75,040 homes as of October, a 23.8 percent decrease from the 98,506 homes produced over the same interval in 2022, according to data from the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform.

Hot Markets: The most desirable housing markets in recent years — particularly those in the Southeast, such as Florida, Texas and Colorado, but also Utah, Colorado and Montana in the West — will likely continue to appeal to developers and prospective buyers alike. Part of the reason? Their comparatively light tax burdens.

Price Point: A large part of manufactured housing’s 21st century popularity has been its comparative affordability and those conditions will certainly continue in 2024. With the federal government now reporting the median price of a traditional single-family home at around $400,000 — a sum beyond the reach of many prospective buyers — manufactured homes’ popularity can likely only grow.

Developing Demographics: An emerging trend is manufactured housing’s newfound popularity among younger households. Until recently, manufactured homes mainly catered to 55+ retirees looking to downsize or buyers seeking a stepping stone to a larger home. Given the nation’s seemingly endemic sky-high housing costs, all sorts of age groups are interested in quality, less expensive options. Moreover, data reveals these younger buyers are staying in their manufactured homes longer due to those same budget restraints.

Cost Savings Make Manufacture Homes Increasingly Attractive for First-Time Buyers

For generations of Americans, purchasing their first house was a celebrated rite of passage, that moment when young couples, having committed to each other, established a home wherein they can flourish, raise children and contribute in a substantial way to the community and the nation.  That, however, was then.

The reality today is that buying a house remains little more than a pipe dream for many Americans. There are a number of social and economic factors contributing to this crisis, not the least of which is a growing population and a national housing inventory that cannot keep pace. With economic forecasts projecting little change in the situation anytime soon, more and more Americans are considering purchasing manufactured homes. If you are one of them, here are some of the economic benefits to bear in mind in the debate between conventional homes and manufactured ones.

Affordability: Manufactured houses can provide quality housing at prices up to 50% less per square-foot than their standard counterparts. The U.S. Census Bureau reports the average sale price of a new manufactured home to be around $88,200, compared to the average traditional home price of $408,800. The exact cost will depend on the model, of course, just as used and new mobile homes also vary in price. Also bear in mind that manufactured homes can be secured with a down payment of as little as 3%.

Energy Efficiency: Modern manufactured homes are designed to be energy-conscious, meaning you can save a considerable amount of money on heating bills compared to a conventional home. Energy-efficient windows and doors, roof, wall and skirting insulation are utilized during the build to reduce heat loss, and investing in insulated curtains is another great way to save money on your heating bills.

Lower Maintenance Costs: There are costs involved with owning and maintain any type of property, whether it’s a manufactured home, an apartment or a conventional house. That said, manufactured homes in general are made with less expensive materials, which means parts are easier and cheaper to fix or replace.

Lower Taxes: Manufactured homes are not considered as real estate property, which means you won’t have to pay property taxes. The average annual property tax in the United States is more than $3,000, which means you will save a lot in this area from living in a manufactured home.

Site Fees: Lot rent and ownership is the amount you pay for the plot of land where your manufactured home will sit. Typically, lot rent also will include water and sewage, garbage collection, the upkeep of the grounds. In some parks, lot rent also includes internet, cable TV and some utilities, such as electricity. Even with a mortgage to pay on top of this, your overall rent and mortgage cost will be under $1,000, which is much cheaper than a conventional home.

Tips For Starting — And Sticking With — A New Hobby

Decades of research has confirmed the benefits to be derived from pursuing a hobby, including lower blood pressure and enhanced self-esteem and interpersonal relations. Sure, we all have to go to work but for many of us it’s the hobbies that make that 9-to-5 commitment bearable.

Whether your hobby is stamp collecting, practicing yoga or fly fishing, you have no doubt encountered challenges squeezing it in to your hectic schedule. Simply put, time constraints have a way of frustrating our best intentions, with the result that many people let their hobbies slide. If you’re in that situation, here are five steps you can take to reignite your interest in and/or identify a new hobby.

One Step At a Time: Starting or returning to a hobby can seem a daunting task initially, particularly if doing so requires sizable chunks of money and time. The answer is to take it slow and break the process down into a few essential steps. Write down those you believe you will need to follow and concentrate on one thing at a time. Know that once you learn how to do each step, you will know it for life and be able call upon it as needed.

Get in the Habit: It’s no secret that people develop expertise through repetition — if you want to play the guitar well, you’re going to have to practice a lot. It can be helpful to set aside a specific time in your day for your hobby, which will help you enhance your skills, consistently reap important health and social-emotional benefits and reduce the chances you will drop the pastime. If you want to develop a hobby, the more consistent you are with it, the longer you will stick to it.

Partner Up: Strength in numbers is a powerful thing. Try finding someone else who wants to purse the same passion as you. Alternatively, you may want an accountability partner that you meet with regularly. Knowing you will have to talk about your progress and take responsibility is motivating.

Have Fun: Make sure you enjoy what you’re doing, at least most of the time. You need to be excited about the activity and not dread it. One thing to ask yourself is whether this activity is something you are legitimately interested in or whether it’s something you feel like you should do because of other people. Remember, this is about doing what you really love. Be sure to pursue your own passion and not someone else’s.

Reconnection: There are going to be days where you just don’t feel up to doing anything with your hobby, but you must fight that impulse. Think about the end goal or even how pursuing the hobby will be able to help you. It will remind you that what you’re doing is important.

Tips for Weatherproofing Your Manufactured Home for Winter

Fall is in full swing across the United States, with the nation’s leaves and temperatures both falling as the days grow shorter. On deck: Winter.

While everyone wants to stay warm this winter, owners of manufactured homes face a specific set of challenges in keeping both their unit and their personal economic status comfortable. Here are some steps you can take to make your manufactured home more energy efficient before the winter winds blow.

Control the Temperature: Those chilling shivers down the spine might prompt you to rush to the thermostat and turn it up. Resist the temptation. Government guidelines call for leaving the thermostat at 68 degrees to maximize your heating unit’s efficiency and to keep your monthly energy bill manageable. If you’re out of town or have simply gone to bed, set the thermostat to 60 degrees.

        Insulation Consultation:
Depending on your unit’s age and construction, there’s a chance its insulation is woefully inadequate to today’s conditions. Your first step is to contact a professional installer who can tell you what needs to be done to winterproof your unit’s underbelly, walls and roof. Be aware that there are many different types of insulation available, each with their own performance characteristics, so compare your options before deciding.

Winter Seals: Sealing off your manufactured home to the elements means there won’t be any nagging winds blowing through the unit to lower the temperature, forcing the heat to kick on. Check the seals on all your doors and windows. If you discover a hole or tear in your door or window framing, repair it. Next, look at your air vents to make sure they aren’t blocked. If they are, your heater will be working extra hard, resulting in a higher energy bill.

Caulk Talk: If you can’t replace your current doors and windows with more energy-efficient ones, caulking and weather-stripping can help considerably. Sealing any openings around plumbing fixtures and ducts also can help plug openings that allow heat to escape.

Here Comes the Sun: Even though winter months mean less sunlight overall, use the sun to your advantage as free heat. This is often referred to as “daylighting,” which means using natural sunlight to brighten and warm up the interior of your manufactured home. Open the curtains and shades on windows that face south to bring in free heat and close them after sundown to keep the heat inside. The more natural light you have, the less you have to rely on energy to power lamps and other fixtures.

Hearth to Hearth: Fireplaces are now commonplace in manufactured homes, and we all know nothing says winter like curling up in front of a warm fire on a chilly night. As a bonus, the practice also enables you to turn down the thermostat when you let that natural heat flow. First make sure your chimney is clean and free of any built-up ash or soot, and afterwards close the flue to keep cold air out.

Habits That Will Transform Your Relationship with Your Adult Kids

For many of us, our children – no matter their age – will always be seen as our children. The hitch, of course, is that being a parent to an adult child is a far different experience than parenting a toddler or teenager. What your child needed from you five, 10 or even 20 years ago isn’t what’s needed today.

If your relationship with your adult child isn’t what you want it to be, don’t despair. There are some simple, common-sense guideline you can follow to foster the development of a happier, healthier connection with your now grown-up child.

Keep It to Yourself: When your adult child comes to you with an issue about their career, relationship or even their own kids, it’s easy to assume they’re seeking your input. The reality, however, is that they might merely be looking for a compassionate sounding board and the opportunity to vent. Make sure as the conversation unfolds to determine whether your child is actually seeking advice before you weigh in with any.

Project Faith: Unless there is an overriding reason not to, always project faith in your adult child’s capacity to handle difficult situations. This will bring the two of you closer together, as the child will pick up on the sense that you consider him or her a peer, a competent adult ready to take on life’s many challenges.

Drop the Blame Game: If the relationship between you and your adult child is strained, the last thing you want to do is dwell on the roots of that disruption. Simply put, blaming yourself or your child is not going to make things any better. Instead, turn blame into a personal responsibility to do better. Looking back will not help the situation; moving forward together will.

Regular Check Ins: Given the pace of life in 21st century America, it easy for parents to assume no news is good news when it comes to their adult child. If there was a crisis, the thinking goes, they would let you know. Smart parents, however, know the value of periodic check-ins. Initiating a check-in, whether in-person or over the phone, demonstrates that you care and that you’re open to giving and receiving feedback that in the long run can enhance the relationship.

You Don’t Know How It Feels
: It sounds like a no-brainer but bears repeating nonetheless: never tell your adult child how they should think or feel. That means steering clear of phrases that discount or minimize their experience, like “That didn’t happen” or “Don’t feel that way.” Remember that most disagreements between two people who care about each other are typically more about underlying feelings than they are the topic at hand. Instead of focusing on the details, focus on the emotions and demonstrate that you’re ready to listen.

Set Boundaries: Adult children may set boundaries with their parents around certain charged topics of conversation, like their appearance, finances or career choice. Rather than bristling at these requests, parents should listen and honor those boundaries and even commend the child for standing up for what they need to make the relationship work.
