With COVID restrictions starting to lift across the country, many Bay Area seniors may find themselves looking to cure their cabin fever. Fortunately, you don’t have to make the drive to Los Angeles to find a great beach. Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway or in search of a beach that is wheelchair accessible, you can find these and more within a short drive from the Bay Area.

Here is our list of the top six beaches for seniors in the Bay Area:

Black Sands Beach sits at the south end of a 20-mile, walkable coastline made up of – as the name implies – black sand and pebbles. Here, visitors can also enjoy whale watching. Black Sands Beach is a day-only beach.

Known for its natural scenery and artistic history, Carmel-by-the-Sea is ranked one of the nation’s cleanest and most beautiful beaches. From the historic Carmel Mission to the Hog’s Breath Inn (a bar once owned by actor Clint Eastwood), Carmel-by-the-Sea also has access to fine shopping, art galleries, and great golf.

Nestled at the end of a long, scenic drive sits the remote Drake’s Beach, whose dramatic white sand cliffs make it a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Located in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Muir Beach has a variety of scenic coastal trails to enjoy, with views of the Pacific Ocean and Marin coastline.

On beautiful Rio Del Mar Beach, one can enjoy bird-watching and even view such wildlife as whales, dolphins, and sea lions from the shore. Rio Del Mar is also home to the SS Palo Alto, known as the “cement boat,” a long-stranded freighter ship that served as an entertainment vessel in the WWI era.

Located less than an hour from San Francisco alongside Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Stinson Beach offers walking trails and beautiful, wide-open beaches, as well as access to a variety of restaurants and shopping. The beach is wheelchair accessible.

Be sure and call ahead to find out about any closures that remain in effect. Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen!
