Fall’s arrival brings with it the realization that the trio of holidays that close the year will soon be upon us. Time flies in these months – it feels like you no sooner have the house decorated for Halloween than you must swap out October’s frights for November’s family festiveness and then turn on a dime again to prepare for the Christmas season.

Making sure your décor keeps up with the calendar can be a particularly tricky proposition for owners of manufactured homes. After all, given such units’ smaller confines, just a few misplaced or ill-chosen items can make your home look cluttered rather than welcoming. The solution lies in considering both atmosphere and function as you approach holiday decorating, a strategy that enables you to enhance the overall environment of your home while also caring for its basic systems. The results will please both you and your guests in the last festive months of 2022.

Clean and Organize: Spring cleaning has its place, but the fall variety bring with it the opportunity to clear out all that needless clutter in advance of the holidays. Cast a critical eye around your home to determine what needs to be tossed and what needs to be more efficiently stored.

Be Prepared: Cooler weather means you will be spending more time indoors, so now is the time to catch up on all that basic maintenance you let slide in the heat of summer. You can improve the indoor air quality by having you filters and ducts checked and cleaned. Also inspect your appliance, septic system and HVAC to make sure they are operating a full efficiency and prepare for that holiday foot traffic by repairing any walkways that might trip up a visitor.

Bring the Outdoors In: Once those function strategies are complete, we can look toward how best to enhance your manufactured home’s atmosphere as we proceed toward the end of the year. One favorite is to bring selective outdoors elements into you home. Pumpkins and Indian corn are November staples; consider natural branches or logs to augment December’s wintry vibe.

Let There Be Lights: Additional lighting can certainly augment that cozy holiday feeling we all desire this time of year. When it comes to natural lighting, a few well-placed candles will do the trick. You also might want to consider stringing lights over doors and around entryways to add a dash of drama and warmth.

Quality Over Quantity: A little bit goes a long way in smaller spaces, so do not go overboard with the decorations. Skip the bulky centerpieces, for example, as they might tend to make your home look stuffy, in addition to eating up needed table space you will need when holiday company comes to call.

Trim the List: Now that you have created a welcoming environment, you will want to share it with others. Given the limited space, owners of manufactured homes are advised to invite wisely. After all, more is now always merrier.

At Harmony Communities, we feel strongly that each resident has a sense of home. That they come home from work and feel pride in their environment and in their place in the greater community. That families are comfortable raising children in our neighborhoods, and that couples and singles know that they belong to something bigger than their four walls. In other words, we seek to create harmony within each community, making our communities not just passable, but peaceful, safe, functional, and beautiful.

Autumn looks and feels different depending on which part of the country you call home. In the northern tier of states, the season quickly morphs from sunshine and brisk afternoons to wet days and chilly temperatures that carry more than a hint of the winter to come. In the desert Southwest, by contrast, fall presents an open invitation to get out and enjoy the natural world without fear of having to confront dangerous triple-digit temperatures.

No matter where you live, however, the season offers some of the biggest travel bargains of the year, as airfare, lodging and other costs significantly drop once the kids are back in school. If you’re in a position to access those bargains, here are six fabulous fall destinations to consider.

Leavenworth, Washington: If you’re looking for a taste of Germany but overseas isn’t in the cards, head to Leavenworth. One of the nation’s most authentic Bavarian-style towns, it sits along the eastern slopes of the Washington Cascades and ranks among the best destinations for autumn foliage in the West. Not surprisingly, Leavenworth also hosts a world-famous Oktoberfest complete with outstanding brews, German cuisine, live music and a wide range of family-friendly activities.

Taos, New Mexico: Situated at nearly 7,000 feet, Taos is well known for its vibrant arts scene and natural beauty. In fall, visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor adventures among a backdrop of multi-colored aspens, golden and red cottonwoods and the occasional bald eagle soaring overhead. The city also offers the free Taos Fall Arts Festival featuring performances, projection art and installations amid historic adobe buildings.

Brown County, Indiana: Located in south-central Indiana, this rustic destination is a hidden gem well known to Hoosiers but largely overlooked elsewhere. Reputed to have the most stunning fall foliage in the Midwest, Brown County also is home to an acclaimed state park, several quaint towns and a thriving art and music scene in its largest city, Nashville. And visitors are just a short drive from Bloomington, home of Indiana University and one of the nation’s most vibrant college towns.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania: For a budget-friendly fall vacation that includes the chance to explore history and haunts, try Gettysburg. Here, 51,000 union and Confederate soldiers died during a three-day battle in July 1863, the bloodiest conflict of the Civil War. Particularly popular in October is the Ghosts of Gettysburg Tour, in which visitors learn more about the battle and the fallen while strolling the grounds by candlelight. You also will find among the changing leaves apple orchards and farmers markets, as well as the opportunity to experience the increasingly popular hard cider scene.

Asheville, North Carolina: Home to one of the nation’s longest and most vibrant fall season, Asheville is a joy to visit, with its mild temperatures and Blue Ridge Mountains setting. Hiking is a way of life in Asheville but the city that gave the world Thomas Wolfe is also known for its dynamic literary, music and arts community.

At Harmony Communities, we feel strongly that each resident has a sense of home. That they come home from work and feel pride in their environment and in their place in the greater community. That families are comfortable raising children in our neighborhoods, and that couples and singles know that they belong to something bigger than their four walls. With September’s arrival comes the first indicators of fall – days growing shorter, kids back in school, leaves beginning to turn. Happy to say, the month also brings with it the return of football and the great American tradition of tailgating.

Whether your destination is a massive NFL parking lot or the comparatively subdued surroundings of college football, smart tailgating can substantially enhance the experience, no matter whether which team wins. Here are a few suggestions to make the most of your pre-game party this fall.

Do the Prep Work: Like any other party, lots of planning goes into a successful tailgate. The first step is to create a master checklist with all the items you think you will need – food, beverages, equipment, utensils, paper goods, clean-up materials, etc. Check them off as you gather them and include on the bottom of the list additional tasks you will need to perform, such as washing your vehicle or picking up team merchandise. The more you plan ahead, the easier things will go on game day.

Food and Drink: No matter what you plan to serve, there is still plenty of prep work to be done before you head out to the stadium, such as marinating meat, cutting vegetables, creating skewers or forming burger patties. Likewise, if you plan serving cocktails to your crowd, consider mixing up a sizable quantity beforehand so that all you have to do at the site is stir and pour.

Don’t Forget the Necessities: Avid tailgaters might forgive you given all the other hubbub for overlooking the essentials, but you don’t want to be that host. Make sure to bring enough comfortable chairs for everyone, plenty of water and soft drinks, and always take a long an extra cooler just for storing ice, particularly if you are headed to a game in the warmer, early part in the season.

Go Disposable: Tailgating is a lot more fun for the host when you make sure to bring plenty of plastic spoons, forks and knives, along with a large selection of paper products like napkins and paper towels. You should also pack a supply of aluminum foil bordering on the ridiculous. Simply put, foil is a tailgater’s secret weapon, one that can be sued to keep food warm, scrape a dirty grill and store leftovers for the ride home. Also do not forget the plastic tablecloths and cups.

Be a Good Neighbor: It’s a no-brainer, to be sure, but bears repeating nonetheless – watch your manners out there. For instance, if it is your first time at a particular venue, make sure you are not taking a regular tailgater’s spot by asking, “Is this taken?” Bring heavy-duty trash bags for your garbage and make sure you dispose of it properly. Grilling? Dispose of your charcoal safely and never leave hot coals on the asphalt.Head for the Exits: While the vast majority of your planning and prep goes into getting the party started, that doesn’t mean you should ignore the end of the game. Be sure to plan how most effectively to break down your tailgate, stash your items, clean up after yourself and proceed out of the parking area.
